It’s no secret I love decorating for Christmas, but today I wanted to share my tips for undecorating! After the holidays it can be tricky to decide what decor should stay and what should be put away. Especially because I don’t want our home to feel empty after removing the Christmas decorations. So let’s get into how I winterize my decor!
1. The Right Timing
There are some years where I switch our decor from Christmas to winter right away and there are other years where I wait a little bit. Do whatever feels right for you. This might be different than me, other people you follow online, or even your friends and family—that’s okay! Don’t base when you change the decor in your home on anything other than what makes you the most comfortable.
2. Utilize Your Christmas Decor
I truly love so much of our Christmas decor & don’t want to put it all away after Christmas! I like to make the most out of my decor. So I put away anything that is overly shiny or overtly Christmas-themed and try to keep out the rest! I like to shift things from room to room as well to make the decor feel *new*. For example, I took my ceramic trees off my kitchen windowsill and put them in a cluster on my shelf. Same decor, new look! I did the same with some of my favorite candlesticks too. It’s fun shifting things around! Take your time with the transition and allow for a gradual change to winter decor. Unless you want a fresh start, then clear it all out LOL!
3. My Favorite Winter Decor
For the winter months, I love nordic style decor. Think simple, white, and wood tones when styling your home in the winter. Instead of shiny metals + glass textures opt for brass, bronze or ceramics. Keep out your simple garlands but remove any overly Christmas bits from them like ornaments, bells, or ribbons. Whether faux or real winter greens like pine, rosemary, and cedar give the perfect nordic feel all winter long!
4. Winter Textures
If you have any overtly Christmas pillows, throw blankets, rugs, linens, or towels I would switch those out. I typically stick with throws and pillows that feel more wintery all holiday season! When I think of winter textures I love knits, faux fur, wool, sherpa, and velvet. I’ve found that sticking to a wintery style makes the transition a bit easier.
5. Make Your Tree Last Longer
Aren’t feeling quite ready to take down the Christmas tree? No worries! I’m keeping my main tree up for a bit. Put away the ornaments but keep on the string lights to keep your tree for a little longer! Removing ornaments makes it feel less like Christmas and more like winter decor.
Whether you keep your Christmas decor up until the end of December or the end of January, I hope these tips help you keep your home feeling cozy all winter long!
