Something you’ll notice instantly when looking at my home is the amount of natural light it has. I’m a sucker for it. It stems from having a job where I didn’t get to see much sunlight in my home from Monday to Friday, and then it grew to be an element I’m very passionate about! It was so important to me when we were renovating our new home to maximize the amount of natural light that floods through our windows on a daily basis. That work situation made me realize how much I valued natural light!
Having bright, natural light in my home is honestly an instant productivity boost. Not only that—from a design perspective, skylights also help soften dark shadows in corners and bring out the texture in a space. They’re my secret weapon in creating a beautiful home!
During the renovation we added Velux skylights to three of our rooms, and what a difference it made! A lot of people find it hard to believe that I actually live in Cleveland because of how sunny the house gets. I can confidently thank my skylights for that!
This year, we decided to add more skylights to our home. We’re finally tackling the master bedroom and it wouldn’t truthfully be us without adding skylights. We’re also upgrading skylights in another room which I’ll talk more about later on in this post! Here’s what the master bedroom looked like before the project started.
The new master bedroom skylights are pretty large, 30” x 54”, and are the Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights from Velux. These can open and close, AND you can control the functions from an app on your phone! They also are equipped with beige room darkening shades (perfect for blocking the bright sun) and you can program them to open and close at a certain time as well—amazing. I set mine for a little after sunrise and sunset. Another cool feature is the skylights have a rain sensor that detects bad weather conditions. If the weather takes a turn (which it frequently does in Ohio) we don’t have to worry about running to close our skylights—they’ll close themselves for us. 😉The features on these skylights are seriously so good
We also decided to upgrade our bathroom skylights. The fixed ones we originally had are still great, we just wanted the additional options (automation and ventilation) of the Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights. The new skylights can be opened with a remote or through the app to release humidity from the bathroom! I love that the new skylights come with light filtering shades that will diffuse a little bit of the sunlight coming into the bathroom. The bathroom windows face west, so they get a ton of sun!
The new Fresh Air Skylights are the exact size as the old ones, which is perfect if you are in a similar situation to me and want to upgrade! If you choose the same size skylight as your original size, you won’t have to pay for the cost to re-frame the unit. Game changer!
Velux is a company I have valued from the very beginning stages of renovating my home. I love how they incorporate advanced technology in their products and I honestly just love how elevated their skylights make the space look.
If you’re interested in having skylights installed in your home and are curious about the price range, Velux has this amazing outline that will help you get an idea on cost depending on the type of skylight you’d like to install. This is a rough estimate, so understand your price will vary by location!
I had my own contractor install my skylights, but VELUX has a handy installer locator. If you’re interested in adding skylights to your home, see what installers are located in your area!
