my first design project—my best friends first nursery

Earlier this month I finished a nursery design project I had been working on since January. I have never designed a full space (that wasn’t mine) from start to finish so I was honestly a little nervous! The nursery is for my best friend from college, she’s having a baby boy in May and she had the idea of me designing the space! Above all, I was honored and so excited that she wanted me to design the room—I’m so happy with how the space turned out!

I started off by creating a shared Pinterest board for us both to pin ideas to. This helped me figure out details she was liking and made it more seamless in terms of communicating what she was generally hoping for. Overall, she was loving black and brass accents with earth tones – which is right up my alley!

I’m so grateful to have worked with Crate and Kids on the main pieces for the project. I selected all of the furniture pieces from them as Crate and Barrel is a company I know and trust first hand! I love their products—especially for a nursery—because they are truly so beautiful and versatile. I love the clean lines of the Larkin crib, and the fact that it converts into a toddler bed is a huge added bonus! The Taylor walnut dresser I selected is super timeless as well. I can see my friend using it for years to come. I made this little easel and abstract art to tie back to the main art piece in the room.

I love incorporating texture so it was only right to do so in this space! I layered this sheepskin rug on top of the Alfredo rug—I love how they add texture to the room but aren’t overpowering. These are items I can totally see used throughout the home as well if she ever wanted to mix things up. I personally love using pieces that can have multiple purposes from the get-go!

For the crib bedding, I selected a few pieces from Parachute Home. This is another company I know and trust so I was super excited to incorporate their products into the nursery. This baby quilt is so soft and honestly the cutest quilt ever. These adorable pillows + shams also stole mine and my friend’s heart. They are super cozy and cute—the Fog color fit in perfectly with the overall color palette, which I based off this ‘Horse Race’ artwork I shared back in January from BFF Print Shop.

Back in early February, I took a trip out to Columbus to map out the furniture. When I was there I realized there was a large empty wall that would need some love! This is when I decided to add 3 shelves and this cute little seating area for the baby when he’s older! I had the shelves painted Alabaster (same color as the walls) to keep them as consistent and clean as possible. I also recommended Nesting with Grace’s magic light trick here along with these super affordable sconces!

I took my own styling advice and found a few super cute children’s books to use as art. I’m also obsessed with this little bear on the shelf. This area turned out so beautiful!

I think it’s super important to actually be in the space you’re designing. Even if it’s just a FaceTime call and you’re walking around the room with your client. Getting a full feel of the room helps new ideas come to life, rather than looking at flat images!

For finishing touches, I reached out to my favorite hardware company, Nostalgic Warehouse. My friend has always loved the hardware we used throughout our home so I thought it would be perfect to use them for her nursery! She loves brass accents so the New York knobs, outlet covers and switch plate fit in seamlessly.

I was so grateful to be able to create this space for her and I am so in love with the final result. I can’t wait to meet the new baby and I can’t wait for them to enjoy this room together as a family!
