our ‘minimal’ christmas living room

It’s no secret that I love decorating for Christmas. You know it, I know it. 😆 Some areas in my home are decked out…but some have more of a soft, minimal feel to them! Today, I wanted to focus on the minimal Christmas decor in my living room and share some tips with you on how to achieve the look.

First, I recommend starting with a neutral color palette, using decor items you already have! Try using pieces that are timeless and can be used throughout any season. Like my marble sphere or stone-washed velvet pillows for example. I use them throughout the year, all around the house, but mixing them in with the Christmas decor gives them a fresh new look! Keep out your timeless, neutral decor items such as these, and add in a few holiday decor items you love. Your decor doesn’t have to be overly Christmas-y either…anything with accents of green, brass, or gold will work great! [Btw, yes I know we still need curtains. I’m still on the hunt for the perfect ones 😅]

Let me briefly mention the star of our living room, our sectional sofa. 😍 Our sofa is the Coburn Sectional arranged in a custom configuration in the Nomad Snow fabric [it also just so happens to look beautiful with festive decor…and pretty much everything LOL]. It’s super comfortable, durable, versatile, and BEAUTIFUL. I won’t go into too much detail but it is 100% worth the investment, if you want more info check out my full review here.

I used lots of textural pillows & throws to [minimally] dress up the sofa for the holiday season! This is a great way to decorate for the holidays without using Christmas-specific decor. I love having pillows that can transition with my decor throughout the seasons. For the colder months, I look for pillows with lots of texture in a neutral color palette. Some textures and details to think of are wool, knits, faux sherpa, velvet, and tassels.

Let’s talk about the floor! I know rugs are not typically switched out for the holidays…but it’s wise to keep all of the seasons in mind when shopping for a rug! I love the simplicity of my atherton hand-knotted rug, and it’s an added bonus that it flows so well with my simple Christmas decor!

Onto the Christmas-specific decor! Shawn insisted that we got another tree this year & I’m not mad about it 😅we both love it! We got the Faux Pre-Lit Big + Bright Noble Fir, it has a little more of a nordic/whimsical shape and it pairs very well with my style of decor. I’m all about creating unique alternatives to tree collars, which lead to us putting our tree in a basket! I filled the basket with moss to cover the tree base, which gives it a super earthy and natural vibe. What do you think? It’s such a simple, yet unique idea, I love it!

When it was time to decorate our tree, I kept it simple. I recommend giving your ornaments a lot of space in between them to tie back to your minimal decor. Mix a few statement ornaments with some that are more neutral to balance them visually.

Another simple tree collar alternative is wrapping a blanket around the base of your tree. It gives a similar look to a tree skirt but it’s a bit cozier and fluffier! When choosing a blanket, think of playing off of the textures you’re using on your sofa.

Cabinets make perfect displays for Christmas decor, am I right?! I added in some neutral bottle brush trees, faux cedar branches in a basket, and a light-up house with my ‘regular’ everyday decor. Again, you don’t need to go over the top when decorating for the holidays (only if you want to, LOL), a few simple items are all you need! Watch this cabinet come to life for the holidays here!

Finally, let’s get to styling the coffee table! We have the Sullivan Coffee Table in northman sable finish from Arhaus, it is the perfect size and style for our space. I love using unique, decorative trays on our coffee table. It adds so much character to the overall look! I found this vintage cart antiquing and thought it would make the perfect holiday display. I filled it with some unique ornaments + garland to finish the look, watch my reel styling the tray on IG here. The rest of the coffee table is styled with some of my year-round favorites including these candleholders, marble sphere, and coffee table books!

There are times I go over the top with our Christmas decor but you can’t go wrong with the classic, simple, & minimalistic holiday decor look. Use lots of cozy textures like knits, velvet, and wool in your space. Pick a neutral color scheme as the base of your decor & accent with shades of green, brass, and gold [or your favorite holiday colors]. And don’t be afraid to try something out of the box or unique with your holiday decor, this is the perfect time to experiment! I hope this inspired you for decorating your home this holiday season.
