5 Tips For Organizing Christmas Decor

Let’s talk Christmas decor organization! Since I have A LOT of decor, many of you are curious about how I organize and store everything, so I wanted to share some tips with you!

1. Decide What Decor You No Longer Need

Before organizing, go through your decor and see if there are any items you no longer want to use in the future. It’s nice to do this at the end of the season—you can see what you re-used from the previous year and what you didn’t! We like to give items to our church family, immediate family, friends, and donation centers. I absolutely love seeing my decor re-used from previous years in other people’s homes.

This year, when we celebrated Christmas at Shawn’s parents we got to see all the Christmas decor we gave my MIL! My mother-in-law used it throughout her whole house, in a completely different way than I used it, so it was really exciting to see! We also gave one of our church family members lots of cute ornaments and decor. She has 2 little ones and she told me they enjoyed the furry ornaments we gave them. She hosted a women’s group meeting at her home in December and it was so lovely seeing the decor used in her home! Just another avenue to share our blessings with others.

2. Use Clear Bins for Storage

Clear bins are a MUST so you can see what’s inside the bins. I learned over the years that solid bins make the decorating process a little more difficult. Especially if you’re like me and layer in decor at different time periods!

I love that the clear plastic bins can be reused year after year without needing to be replaced, here are some great options!

If you are storing your decor in a garage or shed, using plastic bins with locking lids will also help to ensure creatures aren’t able to get into your decorations.

3. Utilize Original Packaging

Utilize original packing to keep decor intact. If you’ve saved the original boxes this can be a great way to store large items and breakables. In particular, I’ve found that this is helpful for our large faux trees, Christmas smokers, and string lights! Wrap your string lights to the size of the original box and use twist ties to secure them together. This will help to keep the lights from breaking in storage and prevent tangling!

4. Organize Decorations in Groups

Sort all of your decorations into different groups and package them away together. Some of the groupings I organize into are ornaments, lighting, trees, decorative houses, and entertaining! The new bins I’m adding this year are a vertical wrapping paper bin and an ornament organizer. I’ve found the ornament organizer only works for smaller ornaments, my large ornaments are just loosely sitting in a bin. ☺️ Nothing wrong with that!

Choose bin sizes that will work with the amount of items you have per group! For example, my ribbon and card bin is a lot more shallow than my ornament bin, and my ornament bin is A LOT smaller than my decor bin!

Another way to group your decorations would be to organize them by the rooms that they go into. It really just depends on how much you switch up your decorations from one year to the next!

When putting away the decor in a closet, garage, shed, attic or other storage area try to keep this organized too! We decorate inside quite a bit earlier than the outside of our house, so I’d put my outdoor decor in storage first and the indoor decor in last. That way when I am ready to decorate next year all of my indoor decorations are at the front & easy to access without needing to take everything out at once!

5. Label The Bins

This is something new that I’m doing this year. Last year I swapped out a lot of my solid bins for clear ones. This year I’m taking my organizing a step further by labeling them! Nothing fancy, just some labels I made from notebook pages with handwritten notes on them. I think this will help me to stay more organized and know what’s in each bin without having to look inside.

Labeling would be especially helpful if you don’t have clear bins, you can easily check the label to know what’s inside the bins without having to open them up.

I hope these tips are helpful with organizing your Christmas decorations! If you have any other tips, share your ideas in the comments below! I’d love to hear them.
