Finding the ideal curtains for your living room is not only an investment for your bank account but your time too!
We’ve lived in our current home since 2019 and haven’t had window coverings (with the exception of our bedroom and bathroom) since then. Here’s a look at where we started!
After a couple of months of searching for rods for the space and researching the ‘right’ curtains, I found our match! I wanted to talk a little bit about the process since we had a unique situation that may be similar to yours!
Our Belgian Linen Curtains
I found our Belgian linen curtains at Pottery Barn. The linen adds a beautiful, soft texture and a classic look to our windows. These are a timeless style that will last for years to come! I chose the cotton lining which gently filters sunlight and makes the room feel cozy. If you are looking for blackout curtains, they have that option too! This would be perfect for bedrooms. There are eight different color options and five different sizes available for these curtains, which makes them great for different size homes and style preferences!! I have the 50” x 84” panels. The linen curtains have a softened, worn-in look and feel which adds another level of comfort while elevating the space. I absolutely love these curtains and would highly recommend them if you are in the market for new curtains.
Quick Tips For Hanging Drapes
Hang your rod above the window trim, the height above will depend on your ceiling height.
Choose a drape length that slightly kisses the floor. You can always take your curtains to be professionally hemmed if you need them to be a little shorter!
Curtain rings provide an elegant and tailored look that elevates your space overall. These curtains have a 3-in-1 option so you don’t have to use rings if you don’t want to! The store I ordered the custom curtain rods from gave the option to include rings or not, which I liked because I wanted to match the rings to the rod!
Drape Quality
When it comes to deciding what quality of drapes to get there are a few factors to consider such as how often you want to switch them, whether you want blackout or not, and what your budget is. High-quality drapes are a purchase you won’t (or shouldn’t) update for a while (unless you want to 😅) so if you’re able to go with a higher quality curtain, I definitely recommend it. I went with a lower quality sheer in my bedroom last year, they were nice, but the quality didn’t hold up and I had to purchase new drapes this year. The curtains I have in my bedroom are at a mid-tier price point and are a little over half the cost of the Pottery Barn curtains. Linking here! They’re definitely getting the job done, but I do plan to switch them out next year. If you are someone who likes change then this could be a great option for you! For our living room, the ones I went with are higher quality, heavyweight 100% Belgian linen and they also come with hook inserts for the rings!
The cost reflects these features but I know I won’t change these unless my style changes.
Custom Curtain Rods
Custom curtain rods are great if you need a specific width that isn’t offered in the market. Take our living room, for example, we only have a little bit of space in-between the windows so it didn’t make sense to do two rods. Additionally, the width was super wide and there wasn’t anything available in the market that would fit our space. If you’re searching for rods and are having similar issues, custom curtain rods are for you! Here are the ones I used and highly recommend. The quality is amazing and the design is so sleek and timeless.
What I love most about these rods is that they curve into the wall. This is useful for blackout curtains but I personally just love the look, blackout or not! We’re so happy with these rods that we plan to purchase another one for our bedroom next year. These curtain rods give the look of those beautifully designed homes we see by famous interior designers all over IG. I love them!
Curtain Rings
Curtain rings are the most elegant way to hang drapes in my opinion. I was a little scared at first because I had never tried rings without clips before. The custom curtain rods can be purchased with or without the rings, which is great because you can choose the look you want! If you go with this rod and decide to use curtain rings, I recommend installing everything all at once. The rod fits very snug so popping it on and off the wall is challenging once it’s all installed. Once you get your drapes you’ll know exactly how many rings you need per rod, so it’s best to install everything at the same time.
The same goes for the curtains! The curtains I chose came with three hanging options: rod pocket, back tabs, ring top. I thought it was going to be difficult to hang the curtains with the rings but it was SO easy!! The curtains have slots for the hooks to fit in and onto the rings, they come with everything you need to hang it as I did. I love that they give such an elevated look that clips or a rod can’t offer!
I’m so happy with the way these curtains look in our living room! The classic ivory color is the perfect neutral color to transition with our home through the year. I’m glad I waited to find the perfect curtains instead of rushing my decision. These curtains are timeless & great quality. I highly recommend them. I felt like this room couldn’t get any cozier but I guess I was wrong 🤪. Would you agree?! The Belgian linen drapes truly complete the space and I love how our living room looks & feels now!
